On the morning of Sept. 11, 2011, longtime Irvington resident Kevin Gallagher had just dropped his three children, ranging in age from 5 to 11 years old, at school, and expected to relax at home before the start of his 12-hour shift with the New York City Police Department at 7 p.m. Gallagher, who at the time had been working with the NYPD for roughly two decades and was a diver on the department’s scuba team, received calls that morning from his mother and wife, telling him to turn on the news.
