Penny Lick Ice Cream owner Ellen Sledge started selling ice cream from a cart at farmers’ markets in 2013. She opened up her first store, in Hastings, in 2015, followed by locations in Mamaroneck (2023) and Ossining (2024). Penny Lick will celebrate the Hastings shop’s 10th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 12–5 p.m., with crafts, face painting, and a “scoop-a-thon.” A portion of the proceeds of the day’s sales will benefit the Hastings School District's Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA).
In honor of the anniversary, Penny Lick will introduce a limited-edition flavor: a gray ice cream made with charcoal and a caramel swirl that pays homage to the sugar, marble, and paving industries of Hastings’ past. Penny Lick is holding a naming contest for the new flavor. The winner will receive a "Everything But the Scoop" party pack, valued at $85, not to mention bragging rights.
The Dispatch asked Sledge four questions about the sweetest parts of owning Penny Lick Ice Cream.
