First cull reduces deer population by 26
In an effort to manage the deer population and support the regeneration of the Irvington Woods, 26 deer were culled
Ailurophile. Agglutinate. Triskaidekaphobia.
Those are some of the winning words from recent editions of the Friends of the Irvington Library’s annual spelling bee, which returns on Jan. 31 to crown the “Best Spellers of Irvington” for the first time since 2020. The spelling bee ran for 11-straight years at the Irvington Theater until the Covid-19 lockdown, and then renovations to the Irvington Theater, which reopened in this past fall, left the event without a home.
“With the ability to host it in person with a venue that’s befitting to the size, and the ability to gather those numbers again, it seemed like a fitting occasion to bring back what had been a very important and exciting community event,” Friends communications manager Matthew Lowenbraun told the Dispatch.
The spelling bee features teams of three working together to spell out words of various lengths and difficulty. Teams are made up mostly of adults, with an occasional team of teens from Irvington High School, but the event is open to all ages to attend. A section of the program includes space for audience members to challenge themselves and play along.
